Ideal weight gain during pregnancy is one of the challenge that every woman faces while expecting
for their child. In one way, it is a worry for figure conscious ladies & also it can be risk factor for developing diseases such as diabetes in later life if it was too much weight gain.
It is not always 10 kg weight gain during pregnancy or fixed value any longer. Because for an underweight lady, 10 kg may not be able to provide extra energy that is required & for an already over weight lady, that value may be too much. So what is your weight gain? For that you need to calculate your current BMI (body mass index).
Divide weight in kg by your height in meters squared.
For example if your weight is 50 kg & height is 1.5 meters. So your BMI is 50/(1.5 x 1.5)= 22.22 kg/m2
With your BMI, identify your weight category- underweight/ overweight etc
Now I would like to briefly explain you about “trimester”. Your pregnancy is roughly taken as 40 weeks period & first 12 weeks are considered as first trimester. From 12-28 weeks, it is 2nd trimester & 28 weeks onwards it is 3rd trimester.
You can check your pregnancy record to know which trimester now you are in. With the aid of following chart, you can get an idea of the expected weight gain for your weight.
