9 False contraindications to vaccination

Vaccination is very much essential for a child to protect himself against various diseases.

Mothers often worry about child’s vaccination in the presence of some illnesses.

It is true that in cetain instances child should not get vaccinated.

But in many cases child needs to get vaccinated & following ARE NOT contraindications for vaccination with any of the vaccines in the standard schedule.

1.Family members have had any adverse reactions following vaccination before.

2.Family members having convulsions.

3.Previous pertussis-like illness, measles, rubella or mumps infection.

4.Child was born much early & not well developed by the time of the birth(Prematurity) (vaccination should not be postponed).

5.Child is having stable neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy(CP) and Down syndrome

6.Contact with a patient suffering from an infectious disease

7.Child’s mother is pregnant

8.Baby became yellowish after birth

9.Low weight in an otherwise healthy child.

Rikaz Sheriff is responsible for all aspects of innovation and strategy of health informatics solutions of LankaDoctor. Rikaz joined UniverSL Software after working for 5 years as a Senior Medical Officer at Western Hospital where he leads the business development unit with responsibility for marketing strategy, brand management, advertising, and consumer promotions.

He also serves as the chief coordinator for their kidney transplant programme. Rikaz is a life member of the Sri Lanka Medical Association and the Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka. Rikaz holds a MBBS degree from Baqai University (Pakistan) and a Master's degree in Biomedical Informatics from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo. He also works as the Provincial Health Informatician for the Department of Health Services, Western Province.
